Christa
These images document Christa Slotboom's struggle with
cancer and treatment.
Her malignancy was diagnosed when she was still in her early thirties
and pregnant with her third child. Christa also found out that she
had the cancer gene and choose to undergo a radical mastectomy and
have her uterus removed preemptively, along with chemotherapy.
Her aim was to live to see her children (all under five years
old at the time) grow up.
These intimate images were taken in Christa's home and at
the hospital, detailing the stress, despair, pain, and financial
hardship of illness. These images were featured in the documentary
Summer Running and as part of the exhibit "Through
Different Eyes: Faces of Poverty in Virginia."
This series includes nudity and disturbing content.
